CONSTRUCTION DIARY

Building diary

for the redevelopment of Wall 40

After a lengthy refurbishment phase, SW&D was delighted to move into its new headquarters in the heart of Kiel in 2024. The refurbishment of the Wall 40 building was a complex and dedicated project - the impressive result speaks for itself.

Located directly opposite Schwedenkai and on Kiel's boat harbour, Wall 40 now offers three floors of space for the offices of the Management and Foundation administrationthe editorial offices of the pw-portals and the SIRIUS magazine. SW&D's largest funding partner, the ISPKhas found its place here.

Today, it is a place that combines the history and future of SW&D in equal measure.

Above the offices are three rental flats, which impress with their breathtaking view of the Kiel Fjord and the incoming shipping traffic. The ground floor also houses a modern Event area The new headquarters will be a place of exchange and encounter.

Take a look behind the scenes of the refurbishment and discover in this photographic construction diary how Wall 40 shines in new splendour as the headquarters of SW&D:

2024

2024 was a very eventful year at the "Wall 40" construction site. From the outside, the façade is in place and in July 2024, the scaffolding was taken down so that you can now also see from the outside that the Foundation for Science and Democracy is located in Wall 40.

The interior work also made great progress - the offices were ready to move into in April of that year and the event area on the ground floor continued to take shape. In August 2024, SW&D and ISPK invited friends and companions to the Housewarming into Wall 40.

2023

In addition to the further interior work, the most impressive aspect of 2023 was that the entire front of the building had to be renewed - this included the demolition of the previous façade and the reconstruction of the current façade.

2022

The renovation of Wall 40 is visibly picking up speed again - after little had happened on the construction site in recent years for those observing from the outside, the floor slabs for the top floor were laid in 2022 and the topping-out ceremony was held in autumn.

2017 - 2021

In 2017, SW&D decided to acquire the "Wall 40" building in Kiel and develop it into the foundation's new headquarters - in the city that was of particular importance to our founder.

After an intensive planning phase, the construction work began, which presented a number of challenges. As on any construction site, unforeseen structural conditions had to be overcome, and the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic also demanded a high degree of flexibility and perseverance from everyone involved. Despite these hurdles, the project was driven forward with great determination and passion. Progress may have been invisible to passers-by at first, but inside and at the planning table, everyone joined forces to realise the foundation's new headquarters.
