Europe's Strategic Choices 2024 - Two intensive days in Berlin
This year saw the tenth edition of the Europe's Strategic Choices Conference (ESC) which the British think tank Chatham House in co-operation with the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University (ISPK) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin.
Traditionally, this conference brings together high-ranking experts to discuss how European countries can best respond to the various challenges in the areas of security, competitiveness and technology and develop appropriate strategies. This year, the growing tensions in the Pacific between China and the USA, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the outcome of the US election took centre stage.
Over 350 participants from more than 25 countries deliberated and discussed for two days. The focus was on the panel discussions with a total of 64 expert speakers. The ISPK was represented by a team of ten. The Scientific Director of the ISPK, Dr Sarah Kirchberger, spoke on the topic: "Looking East: Understanding Europe's priorities in the Indo-Pacific", emphasising the outstanding nature of the German naval mission in the Taiwan Strait, before going on to moderate the panel on "'Total defence' and societal resilience: Lessons from the Baltic". Prof Dr Joachim Krause spoke on the panel "Internal and external threats and pressures on European democracies".
