As Open Access book is the English-language Anthology "Russia-China Relations: Emerging Alliance or Eternal Rivals?" in the Springer Nature Publishing has been published. The editors are Dr Sarah KirchbergerHead of the Strategic Development Department in Asia-Pacific of the Institute for Security Policy at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Hamburg (ISPK), Svenja Sinjen, Head of the Project "Global Transformation & German Foreign Policy" the Foundation for Science and Democracy (SW&D) and Nils Wörmer, in his function as Head of the International Policy and Security Department in the Analysis and Consultancy Division of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), which he held until May 2022.
The idea for this anthology goes back to an expert workshop under the same title in 2020. It was jointly organised by ISPK, SWuD and KAS as part of the "Global Transformation & German Foreign Policy" project in order to question the potential of a Russian-Chinese alliance. The discussion centred on what consequences such a possible alliance would have for the USA and its European allies in terms of politics, military strategies, technology, economics and science.
Based on the results of the workshop, the anthology presents empirical case studies in 16 chapters by 20 internationally renowned authors from ten countries and provides new insights into the strategic goals of Russia and China. It also discusses ways in which Western nations can counteract such developments.
This anthology is being published at a time when many people are looking at developments in Asia and especially in Russia and China. Even if the Ukraine war was not the reason for this book, it captures the spirit of the times and appeals to academics and students in the field, political decision-makers and anyone interested in Eurasian politics and the influence of a Russian-Chinese alliance on NATO.
