On 24 October 2022, SW&D kicked off its anniversary year with an atmospheric celebration at the traditional Kiel Yacht Club. Long-standing companions and friends*The foundation's employees gathered to celebrate its 30th anniversary together.
It was a special evening full of dialogue, inspiring conversations and reviews of three decades of successful foundation work.
Focus on science and dialogue
As an institution that promotes science, it was important to SW&D that, in addition to the social get-together, there was also an academic focus. The central question was: How can liberal constitutional states with their parliaments fulfil the promise of internal and external peace between states?
Two exciting discussion rounds took place in the afternoon. Representatives from (political) science and political practice shed light on this complex area of tension from different perspectives. The participants in the audience actively contributed with questions and ensured a lively debate.
Special guests, special moments
In the evening, the celebration was officially opened by special guests: Karin Prien, Minister for General and Vocational Education, Science, Research and Culture of the State of Schleswig-Holstein, and Dr Ulf Kämpfer, Lord Mayor of Kiel, addressed personal greetings to the guests. Together with Dr Astrid Kuhn, Chairwoman of the Foundation, they opened the evening. They wished the foundation all the best for the future and emphasised the importance of SW&D for science and democracy.
Another highlight of the evening was the presentation by Prof Dr Joachim Krause, who took those present on a fascinating journey through time in the midst of the festive meal. He shed light on the eventful history of the foundation's new headquarters at Wall 40 in the centre of Kiel, which today serves as a modern venue for meetings and scientific exchange.
A look back to the future
The celebration was not only an opportunity to look back on the foundation's past, but also to look forward to the issues and challenges that will characterise its future. In a relaxed atmosphere, with good food and drinks, the evening was a successful start to an anniversary year that honoured the work of the foundation and provided new impetus for its future work.
Accompanied by inspiring discussions, exciting insights and a warm atmosphere, this festive day was a worthy start to SW&D's 30th anniversary year. Take a look at our picture gallery and enjoy the impressions of the celebration (Photos: Jan Konitzki).
