POLITICAL SCIENCE
AS A PARTNER OF DEMOCRACY

Political science as a partner of democracy

Subject areas

the SW&D

Together with its founder, SW&D understands the Political science as a partner of democracy. Accordingly, it promotes political science research that contributes to overcoming the practical and normative challenges of democratic systems. The Foundation concentrates on two central topics that are of particular importance for the understanding and further development of democratic systems: democracy research with a focus on Parliamentarism and the Foreign and security policy.

The Foundation does not view these areas in isolation, but places particular emphasis on identifying their intersections and interactions. This is because a deeper understanding of the links between parliamentary representation, democratic decision-making and security policy challenges is crucial in order to develop sustainable strategies for the future. Democracy and peace to develop. Safeguarding and promoting democracy and human rights are an integral part of this work - both in the context of German and European foreign and security policy and as a domestic policy task. In times of the growing spread of autocratic forms of government, SW&D is committed to ensuring that democratic principles and values are preserved and strengthened.

In addition, the Science communication plays a key role in the foundation's work. SW&D strives to communicate scientific findings in a generally understandable way and to involve both political decision-makers and those with an interest in politics in a dialogue between research and practice. In this way, SW&D combines scientific expertise with social commitment and makes an active contribution to solving the challenges of our time.

Science communication

Science Com-
munication

in the SW&D

Irrespective of the independent communication of the scientists and editors in the individual institutions and work areas of SW&D, it is a central concern of the foundation to make science accessible and understandable for a broad public. With the pw-portalthe SIRIUS magazine and the diverse Programme of events the Foundation has powerful science communication tools at its disposal. These promote dialogue between research and practice and build bridges between science, politics and society.

SW&D has appointed a central contact person for its science communication in order to bundle and strategically develop the various activities. As Head of Science Communication, Svenja Sinjen will be happy to answer any questions or receive suggestions.

This results in the main subject areas of SW&D:

Democracy and parliamentary structures

The efficiency of the democratic system of government and the strategic ability of a state to act are crucial for the protection of liberal democracy.

The SW&D approach is based on a realistic, normatively demanding understanding of parliamentary democracy that is based on differentiated perspectives.

Security as a promise of democracy

Safeguarding and promoting democracy and human rights are an integral part of our work in the context of German and European foreign and security policy and as a domestic policy task.

In times of growing challenges to democracy, including from established autocracies, SW&D is committed to preserving and strengthening democratic principles and values.

Practical orientation and science communication

SW&D strives to communicate scientific findings in a generally understandable way and to promote a dialogue between research, political actors and the interested public. Practice-orientated political science is aimed at both decision-makers and anyone with an interest in politics.
