New electoral law: Bundestag election 2025 in the explanatory video
In February 2025, the German Bundestag will be elected according to the new electoral law - for the first time on the basis of the 2023 reform and the decision of the Federal Constitutional Court of 30 July 2024. The reform will largely eliminate overhang mandates, so that in future (apart from extremely rare exceptions) exactly 630 MPs will be elected.
But how exactly does the new process work?
Sven T. Siefken (Federal University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration) and Daniel Hellmann (Institute for Parliamentarism Research, IParl) explain all the important details in an informative video:
from the role of the first and second vote to the calculation of mandates and the distribution of seats according to Land lists.
HERE you get to the video.
The video provides a clear introduction to the new rules and shows how the reform affects the composition of the Bundestag.
